“Rockin’ in the Free World”

Written in 1992 for a book entitled Rock and Roll: The 100 Best Singles. My list, which also included “For What It’s Worth,” was in chronological order, so this great 1989 single was the next-to-last piece in the book, just before “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

The death of rock and roll. Well deserved. Leave it to Neil Young to sum it all up in one bitter, uncompromising, off-the-wall, unshakeable image:

“I see a woman in the night

With a baby in her hand…

Now she puts the kid away and she’s gone to get a hit

She hates her life and what she’s done to it

There’s one more kid that will never go to school

Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool

Keep on rockin’ in the free world”
